Exclusive: Pat Mastelotto of Tu-Ner on ‘Rendezvous Rodeo,’ King Crimson, and Mr. Mister

One of my favourite bands since the early 1990s has been King Crimson, a group that regularly changed styles and sounds over the course of 50 years under the auspices of founding member and leader, Robert Fripp.

One of the most consistent members of King Crimson has been drummer Pat Mastelotto, who joined in the early ’90s as part of the double-trio line-up and remained with the band through its subsequent permutations and its supposed final incarnation, which toured between 2014 and 2021. Apart from his King Crimson bona fides, Mastelotto was a founding member of Mr. Mister, playing on their chart-topping album, Welcome to the Real World, and their two #1 hits, “Kyrie” and “Broken Wings.”

Currently, Matelotto is a part of two Crimson-esque bands – Stick Men, alongside King Crimson/Peter Gabriel bassist Tony Levin and touch guitarist Markus Reuter, and Tu-Ner, a fully instrumental group that also includes Reuter, along with former King Crimson member Trey Gunn, who plays Warr guitar.

Friday, July 24, sees the release of Tu-Ner’s new live album, Rendezvous Rodeo, which was recorded in August 2025. It combines music from Tu-Ner, along with 2000s-era King Crimson material. I had the chance to talk to Pat Mastelotto about Tu-Ner, his work in King Crimson, and we even talked a little about Mr. Mister as well.
