What’s Going On: Rolling Stones Reissue ‘Forty Licks’

The Rolling Stones‘ iconic Forty Licks compilation just got a shiny new digital release. The collection, which was given the Dolby Atmos® treatment, was dropped recently to coincide with Mick Jagger’s milestone 80th birthday. Forty Licks was originally released back in September 2002 to mark the 40th anniversary of the legendary band and to kick off the band’s Licks tour. The massive tour that started in Boston saw the rockers play 117 shows over the span of 14 months and wound up being recognized as the second-highest-grossing tour ever at the time. Toronto fans will also remember that during that tour, the Rolling Stones headlined Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto (or SARSStock, as it has come to be known,) the massive benefit show in July 2003 to help the city recover from the economic setbacks of the SARS epidemic.

In addition to being released digitally for the first time, Forty Licks is also available as a limited edition 4-LP set on 180-gram black vinyl. With its iconic cover art and a great wide-spined gatefold sleeve, the Forty Licks vinyl will make a great gift for Stones fans of any generation. Featuring three dozen of the band’s most loved songs and four then-new tracks, the collection spans material from all the way back in their early days on Decca in the ‘60s up to newer material that had been written in 2001.

Clocking in at over 2 and a half hours, Forty Licks stands as the ultimate greatest hits compilation of The Rolling Stones. The band’s most enduring hits are featured, such as “Satisfaction”, “Miss You”, “Brown Sugar”, “Paint It, Black”, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, “Get Off Of My Cloud” and “It’s All Over Now.” There’s a reason why Forty Licks sold seven million copies worldwide after its initial release.
