Hide your pets! After the success of Maleficent and The Descendants, Disney’s dug into their vast library of characters to give the grimdark live-action origin story treatment (see also: Joker and Harley Quinn) to one of their most memorable villains, 101 Dalmations‘ Estella “Cruella” Deville. The new film, called – sit down for this one – Cruella stars Emma Stone as the titular character, a young and ruthless fashion designer in the 1970’s London punk scene who becomes obsessed with animal skins, particularly those of cute puppies. It looks like they’re presenting her as a kind of Joker-esque psychopath, but I think she’s just as sick of that damn Paw Patrol as I am.
Disney previously announced the project back in 2019, but we’ve got the first trailer today!
Stone is joined in the cast by fellow Emma, Emma Thompson and Paul Walter Hauser. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) is directing from a script concept by Aline Brosh McKenna (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend).
Disney’s Cruella is currently scheduled to be released in theatres on May 28, 2021.
