‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ debuts with $175 million

The force was with Star Wars this weekend, as the final film in the Skywalker Saga had an excellent debut weekend.

Sure, naysayers will argue that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker didn’t perform as strongly as The Last Jedi did when it arrived back in 2017. Well, $175 million is still pretty amazing, and coming off the divisive response to The Last Jedi and the fact that this is the last weekend before Christmas, it’s hard to frown at this number. While The Rise of Skywalker will be the least successful of the third trilogy, I have no doubt money will still be made. And while the critics frowned hard at this final instalment, audiences have embraced this movie and it could have legs over the ensuing weeks.

As for the rest of the top five, Jumanji: The Next Level was in second place with $26 million. Frozen II was in third place with $12 million. The horror that is Cats debut in fourth place with $6.5 million, while Knives Out closed things out in fifth place with $6 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – $210 million
2) Jumanji: The Next Level – $25 million
3) Cats – $11 million
4) Frozen II – $10 million
5) Knives Out – $6 million
