Well, I’m not too sure but I “think” it’s going to be a big weekend at the box office.
Who am I kidding, it’s going to be huge, as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives to close off a nine-film series that began forty-two years ago and changed moviedom forever, for both good and bad. For the final Skywalker story, director JJ Abrams has returned to finish the saga. There’s no doubt the movie is going to make big bucks, but just how much is up for grabs. There’s a vocal minority who were down on 2017’s The Last Jedi (which still made oodles of cash), and I’m curious to see how they react to the new film. At the same time, so far reviews have been not great, with The Rise of Skywalker currently sitting at 59% at Rotten Tomatoes, a far cry from The Force Awakens‘ 93% and The Last Jedi‘s 91%. Will this affect word of mouth? Not this weekend, but it could over the ensuing ones. Either way, The Rise of Skywalker is our guaranteed number one for the weekend, and I’m thinking it will do so with a strong $210 million.
Also new this weekend is the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats, which looks absolutely frightening and not in a good way. Reviews have been unsurprisingly horrid with the film right at 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nobody was asking for Cats, and I believe that will be evidenced at the box office. Look for a third place debut with $11 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Jumanji: The Next Level will drop to second place with $25 million. Frozen II will be in fourth place with $10 million, while Knives Out will close things out in fifth place with $6 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – $210 million
2) Jumanji: The Next Level – $25 million
3) Cats – $11 million
4) Frozen II – $10 million
5) Knives Out – $6 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
