‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ Tops the Box Office, ‘Richard Jewell’, ‘Black Christmas’ Sink Hard

It’s always great when a new film is able to overperform at the box office. That’s exactly what happened with this weekend’s big new release.

Jumanji: The Next Level managed to do better than what most pundits, myself included, thought it would. While some thought the sequel to the 2017 hit would debut with anywhere as low as $40 million to as high as $50 million, the film managed to exceed all expectations and arrive in theatres with an outstanding $60 million. Chalk that up to having all the pieces in place with the same cast and director, along with the goodwill that comes with the $400 million the last film delivered. While it’s doubtful the sequel can deliver that lofty number again, Jumanji: The Next Level should enjoy a good run at the box office as 2019 comes to a close, even with the behemoth that arrives next weekend.

As for the rest of the top five, Frozen II dropped to second place $19 million. Knives Out was in third place with $9 million. New release Richard Jewell fizzled into fourth place just $5 million, while Black Christmas did even worse, closing out the top five with just $4.4 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Jumanji: The Next Level – $50 million
2) Frozen II – $23 million
3) Black Christmas – $15 million
4) Richard Jewell – $12 million
5) Knives Out – $10 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

3) Knives Out – $9 million
