Frozen II looks to heat up the box office this weekend

It’s going to be a big weekend at movie theatres, as the long-awaited sequel to a Disney animated favourite arrives.

Frozen II brings back the principal voices from the 2013 hit film – Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad reuniting, along with newcomers Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood and Alfred Molina joining the cast. There’s no question that the film is going to be absolutely huge (though it will be interesting to see if there’s a song in it as immediately classic as “Let It Go”).  Even without the generally strong notices the movie has already been receiving (it’s currently at 78% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes), Frozen II is guaranteed to bring in families this weekend. Look for a big-time debut of $120 million and a fist place debut.

Also new this weekend is A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, the true story of a journalist assigned to cover Mr Rogers, here played by Tom Hanks. The movie has received unanimous praise, beginning with Hanks’ performance. Whether this translates to box office dollars is another matter. Look for a third-place debut with $17 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Ford v Ferrari will drop to second place with $18 million. Midway will be in fourth place with $6 million while Playing With Fire will close things out in fifth place with $4.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Frozen II – $120 million
2) Ford v Ferarri – $18 million
3) A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood – $17 million
4) Midway – $6 million
5) Playing With Fire – $4.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
