It’s supposed to be a big weekend at the box office, but all signs are pointing to it being less impressive than hoped for, even with a new Terminator film entering the fray.
If you haven’t read my review of Terminator: Dark Fate, you might want to take a moment to get my feelings on yet another lacklustre entry into a dead franchise. To be fair, there are a lot of folks that enjoyed the film, so take my words as just that – mine. However, regardless of the middle ground reviews that the film is generating, the word out of Hollywood is that Dark Fate is tracking poorly. That means that interest just isn’t there. So while Terminator: Dark Fate will land in the top spot at the box office, don’t expect it to do so with strong numbers. Look for a $38 million debut.
Also new in theatres is Harriet, a biopic about the legendary abolitionist and activist. The film has roughly the same Rotten Tomatoes score as Terminator: Dark Fate (73% vs 70%, with Harriet coming out higher) and can serve as some counter-programming to all the explosions. Look for a fourth place debut with $8.5 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Joker will be in second place with $12 million. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will be in third place with $10 million, while Zombieland 2: Double Tap will close things out in fifth place with $8 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Terminator: Dark Fate – $38 million
2) Joker – $12 million
3) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – $10 million
4) Harriet – $8.5 million
5) Zombieland 2: Double Tap – $8 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
