‘Good Boys’ Makes A Surprise Showing at the Box Office

There were surprises this weekend, as one film managed to top the box office while another couldn’t find its wings.

Good Boys, the raunchy R-rated comedy hit grabbed the top spot, bringing in an estimated $20 million. This is a great debut for a film that has neither big stars or franchise clout. What Good Boys did have going for it was excellent reviews and strong word of mouth. It had been a while since an R-rated comedy managed to make its presence felt, and with the majority of big blockbusters behind us, the time was right for Good Boys.

As for the rest of the top five, Hobbs and Shaw dropped to second place with $14 million, while Disney’s The Lion King was in third place with $11.9 million. Sony’s The Angry Birds Movie 2 was DOA, landing in fourth place with a terrible $10.5 million. Though they may still fly on your phones, it appears there’s little interest in seeing The Angry Birds on the big screen any more. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark closed things out in fifth place with $10 million.

As for 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, in debut outside with top five with $9 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) The Angry Birds Movie 2 – $22 million
2) Good Boys – $17 million
3) Hobbs and Shaw – $15 million
4) 47 Meters Down: Uncaged – $14 million
