‘Aladdin’, ‘Brightburn’ Enter The Summer Box Office Fray

It’s a whole new world this weekend at the box office, as the latest live-action Disney adaptation hits theatres.

Disney’s Aladdin has Will Smith as the Genie, relative unknowns Mela Massoud and Naomi Scott are Aladdin and Jasmine, respectively, Guy Ritchie as director, and some of the catchiest songs you could ask for. It’s also a Disney film, so essentially we’re looking at a no-brainer for the top film this weekend. However, reviews haven’t been great, which means the film may wind up eventually suffering some bad word of mouth. However, this weekend Aladdin is safe, and should debut with a strong $80 million.

Also out this weekend is the “what if Superman turned out to be evil” horror film, Brightburn. The trailers have been excellent for this one, and the concept, while not new in the comic book world (see Mark Waid’s Irredeemable), is a first for the big screen. Elizabeth Banks stars, and the movie was produced by James Gunn from a story written by his brother Mark and cousin Brian. Brightburn was made for $6 million, and should have no problem making that back and then some this weekend. Look for a fourth place debut with $18 million.

As for the rest of the top five, John Wick: Chapter Three – Parabellum will drop to second place with $24 million. Avengers: Endgame will be in third place with $19 million, while Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will close things out in fifth place with $15 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Disney’s Aladdin – $80 million
2) John Wick: Chapter Three – Parabellum – $24 million
3) Avengers: Endgame – $19 million
4) Brightburn – $18 million
5) Pokemon: Detective Pikachu – $15 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns our!
