Everyone can remember Clue from their youth!
Why, I can remember many a summer holiday, rain or shine, playing the murder-mystery board game with my neighbourhood pals, trying to solve the suspicious death of one of the mainstay characters…before my friends did!
We’d be spread out on the kitchen table, basement floor, front porch or backyard patio, playing Clue again and again. Sometimes we’d dress up as the characters, pillaging parental closets for old, fake-pearl necklaces, cravats, coats or hats. (This was a decade before the characters on Beverly Hills 90210 did the same with their on-screen poker parties.)
Ah, those were the days! Ms. Scarlet in the conservatory with the…um…candlestick, of course!
The pop culture phenomenon that has charmed and entertained kids and adults alike for decades now returns to the comic book format with a brand new miniseries from IDW Publishing called Clue: Candlestick!
Written and Illustrated By: Dash Shaw
Published By: IDW Publishing
It’s not like this is the first time Clue has been published as a comic book.
Why, current publisher, IDW, released a Clue series nearly two years ago. This column highlighted it back then – which you can find right here.
In today’s incarnation, Clue: Candlestick is in the hands of award-winning indie writer and artist, Dash Shaw. You might know him from critical works such as Bottomless Belly Button, New School and Doctors.
His style is certainly distinct: simple forms arranged in panels full of storytelling information. It’s an underground style, full of 1960’s pop culture resonance, but rife with twenty-first century sensibilities. Shaw is a storyteller. And every line, every panel, every page, every ounce of his hand-lettered books tows his storytelling line.
Clue: Candlestick is a singular, and fun, vision of an artist utilizing his full pop culture powers.
And the best part? We’re all along for the murder-mystery ride!
All of your favourite characters are in each of the extra-sized issues of Clue: Candlestick. It’s full of puzzles, brain twisters, mazes, and mayhem…along with Clue game cards – based on the characters (which you can use, of course, at your next game of Clue dress-up party)!
