‘Detective Pikachu’ Delivers a Record-Breaking Weekend, Even as ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Hold Strong

It was another strong weekend for The Avengers, even with a Pokemon nipping at their numbers. Here’s what went down at the box office:

Avengers: Endgame held on to the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated $63.1 million. The film has now crossed $723 million in North America, making it the third biggest movie in North American history. It should have no problem topping Avatar, which currently sits in second place with $760.5 million.

Opening in second place was Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, which debut with $58 million, a record for any film based on a video game. It certainly helps that Ryan Reynolds is currently a big name star who is willing to push the film. It will be interesting to see what sort of hold the film can muster in the coming weeks.

As for the rest of the top five, The Hustle debut in third place with $13.5 million. The Intruder managed to drop just 39% week to week and grab fourth place with $6.6 million. Finally, Long Shot closed things out in fifth with $6.1.
