Will Poor Reviews Send ‘Hellboy’ to Box Office Hell This Weekend?

This weekend sees the reboot of a franchise that probably didn’t need one in the first place, and that’s already panned by everybody who’s seen it. It sounds like it’s going to be hell for Hellboy.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy series was a well-regarded interpretation of the Dark Horse Comics character created by Mike Mignola. The two films made decent money and there was fan anticipation for a third and final film. However, the series has been rebooted with director Neil Marshall at the helm, and Stranger Things‘ David Harbour has replaced Ron Perlman as Hellboy. This appears to have been a colossal mistake, as the film is currently sitting at 12% at Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews coming down on a muddled script and inconsistent special effects. That news is going to spread quickly, and there’s very little chance that Hellboy is going to break out to a wider audience. Look for a third place debut with $15 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Shazam should hold on to the top spot with $23 million. The new animated film Missing Link is going to be the choice for families this weekend, and with strong reviews, it could even give Shazam a run for its money. Look for a second place debut with $20 million. The Big-inspired Little will debut in fourth place with $14.5 million, while Dumbo should close things out in fifth place with $9.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Shazam – $23 million
2) Missing Link – $20 million
3) Hellboy – $15 million
4) Little – $14.5 million
5) Dumbo – $9.5 million
