‘How To Train Your Dragon 3’ Should Fire up the Weekend Box Office

This weekend sees the release of two new films, both with strong reviews and a built-in fan base. Which will top the box office?

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the third, and rumoured to be final film in the Dreamworks trilogy that has been a huge success with audiences and critics alike. The previous installment, released back in June 2014, opened with $49.5 million, and there’s little reason to think this new one won’t perform in the same ballpark. Look for a first place debut for How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World with $47 million.

Also new this weekend is Fighting With My Family, the true story of WWE superstar Paige, and featuring Dwayne The Rock Johnson on screen, as well as behind the scenes as a producer. Paige was one of the most popular females in WWE over the past few years, a leader of the women’s revolution. The question is whether or not her story has enough appeal to the legion of WWE fans to shell out their dollars. I’m going to wager that the film will be a slow burn rather than a massive hit. Look for a fourth place debut for Fighting With My Family with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, last week’s number one, Alita: Battle Angel will fall to second place with $17 million. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part will be in third with $11.5 million, while Isn’t It Romantic will close things out fifth place with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) How To Train Your Dragon; The Hidden World – $47 million
2) Alita: Battle Angel – $17 million
3) The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part – $11.5 million
4) Fighting With My Family – $10 million
5) Isn’t It Romantic – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. Good, solid list. I do think that Lego 2 will only fall to second place. I look forward to your post on the results next week…
