When you’re wrong, you’re wrong, and in the case of this week’s number one film at the box office, I was definitely off with my prediction.
The Meg managed to top the box office with an excellent $44.5 million. This was significantly higher than what pundits, including myself, predicted. The fact that reviews haven’t been horrible certainly helped Jason Statham and company. I went to an afternoon show this weekend, because I was eager to see some serious shark action. While The Meg is far from a bad film, I will say that I was disappointed that there wasn’t more shark carnage and scares (Statham himself thought the film was going to be R-rated, but the studio made the decision to cut the gore for a PG-13 rating). The Meg is more fun than frightening, but audiences were clearly excited to see it on the big screen, as its debut number demonstrates.
As for the rest of the top five, Mission: Impossible – Fallout was in second place with $20 million, raising its total to $160 million in North America. I saw this one as well this weekend and, wow, what an outstanding film. It’s as good as everyone, including our Scotty Guest say that it is, with those spectacular action sequences and solid performances from everyone involved.
Disney’s Christopher Robin was in third place with $12.4 million, followed by new release Slender Man in fourth place with $11.3 million. Another new release, BlackKklansman, closed things out in fifth place with $10.8 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Mission: Impossible – Fallout – $24.5 million
2) The Meg – $23 million
3) Disney’s Christopher Robin – $15 million
4) BlackKklansman – $10.5 million
5) Slender Man – $10 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) The Meg – $44.5 million
2) Mission: Impossible – Fallout – $20 million
3) Disney’s Christopher Robin – $12.4 million
4) Slender Man – $11.3 million
5) BlackKklansman – $10.8 million
Next weekend sees the release of Crazy Rich Asians. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
