Audiences chose not to smell what The Rock was cooking with his latest feature film, as audiences elected to take a trip to the third entry in a family franchise.
Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation debut in the top spot at the box office, bringing in an estimated $44 million, just slightly down from the second film’s $48 million. This is a strong debut for the movie and shows that, while Adam Sandler may not have much of an adult theatrical audience right now, kids are still engaged with the antics of Drac, Mavis and company.
There was minimal engagement with Dwayne Johnson’s Die Hard-homage, Skyscraper, which could only muster up $25 million and a third place debut. Reviews have been lacklustre for this one and, as charming as The Rock is, it’s likely that he’s overextending himself right now, with three films (Jumanji, Rampage, and now Skyscraper) released in less than a year. It’s probably time for a little break from the big guy, so he can come back to an audience that misses him.
As for the rest of the top five, Ant-Man and The Wasp dropped to second place with $28 million, bringing its two week total to $132 million. The film is on track to equal the previous installment’s final tally of $182 million. Incredibles 2 was in fourth place with $16 million, while Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom closed things out in fifth place with $15.5 million.
