After a decade of outstanding filmmaking, this weekend saw Marvel Studios deliver a new benchmark in blockbuster performance, as Avengers: Infinity War had the biggest opening in history. Here’s what went down:
Everybody knew that Infinity War was bound for greatness – this was, after all, the culmination of Phase Three of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, with nearly all of its heroes joining forces to combat the Mad Titan, Thanos. Deliver greatness it did, as Infinity War blew past Star Wars: The Force Awakens three-day total of $247 million to claim a new box office record with UPDATED – $258 million. Bragging rights to us, as that was the exact number we predicted. With critical and fan acclaim, the film should have zero problem holding on to the top spot for the next few weeks. How far can the total climb? $500 million should be easy. $600? Possible. More? We’ll have to wait and see.
As for the rest of the top five, A Quiet Place was in second place with $10.65 million. I Feel Pretty was in third with $8.1 million, with Rampage right behind it in fourth place with $7.1 million. Amazingly, Black Panther closed things out in fifth place with $4.3 million, bringing its own total to $688 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Avengers: Infinity War – $250 million
2) A Quiet Place – $10 million
3) Rampage – $9 million
4) I Feel Pretty – $8.5 million
5) Super Troopers 2 – $4 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) Avengers: Infinity War – $258 million
2) A Quiet Place – $10.65 million
3) I Feel Pretty – $8.1 million
4) Rampage – $7.1 million
