Audiences entered the Oasis, as ‘Ready Player One’ debuts at the top of the box office

Audiences were clearly ready for Steven Spielberg’s return to blockbuster filming, as Ready Player One raced its way to the top of the box office in its opening weekend. Here’s what went down:

The huge spectacle that is Ready Player One was the easy winner at the weekend box office, bringing in an estimated three-day total of $41.2 million, with a eyes on a $52 million four-day showing for the holiday long weekend. Along with having a built-in audience thanks to the popularity of Ernest Cline’s pop culture novel, it’s been far too long since Steven Spielberg delivered a crowd-pleasing, eye candy extravaganza. Biff Bam Pop! alumni Scotty G and I went to see the film in IMAX on Friday, and we both enjoyed it (though we also agreed the third act was overlong). Having not read the book, I went in ready for a new film experience, and that’s exactly what I got. The opening race in particular was mesmerizing. If you didn’t see Ready Player One this weekend, try and check it out in IMAX, where I believe it really shines.

As for the rest of the top five, Tyler Perry’s Acrimony debut in second place with $17.1 million. Black Panther was in third place with $11.2 million, bringing its total to an incredible $650 million. I Can Only Imagine was in fourth place with $10.8 million. Finally, Pacific Rim: Uprising crashed and burned hard, suffering a 68% drop as it moved from first to fifth place with $9.2 million.

So, to recap, here were our three-day predictions:

1) Ready Player One – $45 million
2) Tyler Perry’s Acrimony – $18 million
3) Black Panther – $11 million
4) Pacific Rim: Uprising – $10.5 million
5) I Can Only Imagine – $10 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Ready Player One – $41.2 million
2) Tyler Perry’s Acrimony – $17.1 million
3) Black Panther – $11.2 million
4) I Can Only Imagine – $10.1 million
5)Pacific Rim: Uprising – $9.2 million

Next weekend sees the release of Blockers and A Quiet Place. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
