Can Black Panther make it six weekends in a row on top, or will the biggest movie of the year finally make way for an uprising and a new number one? Here’s our prediction:
Though the original Pacific Rim wasn’t much of a hit in North America when it was released back in 2013, the film managed to make enough money around the world that someone thought a sequel was in order. However, Pacific Rim: Uprising doesn’t have the directorial prowess and vision of Guillermo del Toro to lean on this time out. Instead, del Toro is producing and Steven S. DeKnight is behind the camera. Franchise newcomer John Boyega toplines the film alongside another new face in Scott Eastwood, while original star Charlie Hunnam is nowhere to be found. Now, even though reviews have been absolutely horrid for Pacific Rim: Uprising, audiences may have simply had their fill of Black Panther at this point.
Or have they?
I’m going out on a limb this weekend with my predictions. Look for Pacific Rim: Uprising to have to settle for second place with $23 million. I just don’t think the film has enough of an appeal to make it a must-see.
As for the rest of the top five, Black Panther should be able to hold onto the top of the box office for a sixth weekend in a row, but just by the skin of its teeth. Look for it to bring in $24 million. Debuting in third place with $16 million will be the animated film Sherlock Gnomes, which will give families an fun filled option that they haven’t had since Peter Rabbit was showing earlier this year. The quickly receding Tomb Raider will drop to fourth place with $14 million. Finally, last week’s surprising showing, I Can Only Imagine, will close out the top five with $13.5 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Black Panther – $24 million
2) Pacific Rim: Uprising – $23 million
3) Sherlock Gnomes – $16 million
4) Tomb Raider – $14 million
5) I Can Only Imagine – $13.5 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
