Will Lara Croft Be a Match For ‘Black Panther’?

So, after five weeks ruling the box office, is this the weekend that the King of Wakanda finally has to abdicate his throne? Here’s our prediction:

The biggest film entering the box office fray this weekend is Tomb Raider, a reboot of the classic video game film that, back in 2001, made Angelina Jolie a superstar as Lara Croft. For this new outing, Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander steps into the role, bringing with her a strong acting pedigree but not necessarily the name recognition that is probably needed to make Tomb Raider a success. With poor reviews playing against it, there’s little chance the film will make much of an impression. Look for Tomb Raider to debut in second place with $20.5 million.

Also new this weekend is Love, Simon, aimed at the LGBTQ/YA audience who have read the novel by Becky Albertalli. The film, from frequent CW Network creator Greg Berlanti, had solid placement in last week’s episode of Riverdale, and should do well as counter programming to what else is in theatres. Look for a fourth place debut with $15 million.

As for the rest of the top five, this will be the weekend Black Panther passes the $600 million mark. Look for it to hold on to the top spot with $31 million. A Wrinkle in Time will drop to third place with $18 million, while Game Night will close things out in fifth place with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Black Panther – $31 million
2) Tomb Raider – $20.5 million
3) A Wrinkle in Time – $18 million
4) Love, Simon – $15 million
5) Game Night – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
