‘Flatliners’ and ‘American Made’ enter a crowded box office this weekend

It should be an interesting weekend at the box office, as two new releases that cater to the same audiences as recent hits are looking to make an impact. Will either of them deliver, or will the holdovers remain strong? Here are our predictions:

American Made is a new collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman following the critical if not massive commercial success of Edge of Tomorrow. This crime film has already opened well overseas, but North America is a totally different beast, as Cruise has not had a strong run of late, especially with the lacklustre performances of both Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The Mummy. Unfortunately, even with decent reviews, American Made is going to have a tough time winning over audiences who will likely choose Kingsman: The Golden Circle for their action fill. Look for a third place showing with $15 million.

Also out this weekend is the remake of Flatliners, which nobody has been asking for and that will have a tough time getting audiences out in the wake of the record-breaking success of It. Ellen Page, Diego Luna, and Nina Dobrev are fine actors, but none of them have demonstrated an ability to open a film. Unfortunately, Flatliners will likely… wait for it…flatline at the box office. Look for a fifth place debut with $8 million.

As for the rest of the top five, it’s going to be a battle for first place between It and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The two have been roughly been $1 million apart throughout the daily box office numbers this week, but this weekend could put It once more in the top spot. Look for it to bounce back to first place with $17 million, with Kingsman: The Golden Circle right behind it with $16.5 million. The LEGO Ninjago Movie will land in fourth place with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) It – $17 million
2) Kingsman: The Golden Circle – $16.5 million
3) American Made – $15 million
4) The LEGO Ninjago Movie – $10 million
5) Flatliners – $8 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday and see how the weekend turns out!
