‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ debuts in 1st place at the box office

One franchise hits strong numbers, while another underperforms at the box office. Here’s what went down:

Kingsman: The Golden Circle had an excellent debut weekend, landing in first place with $39 million. That’s $3 million more than the original opened with in 2015, so while a huge improvement, it’s always a good thing when a sequel can open higher than its predecessor. In the case of Kingsman, it’s especially good, considering the reviews, while decent, haven’t been as strong as the first go-around.

It dropped to second place with $30 million, bringing its three week total to a fantastic $266.3 million. The film should have no problems crossing the $300 million mark sometime over the next two weeks.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie debut in third place with an underwhelming $21 million, nowhere near the the numbers of The LEGO Movie or The LEGO Batman Movie. Reviews haven’t been nearly as strong for this entry into the franchise, which definitely factored into this showing.

As for the rest of the top five, American Assassin was in fourth place with $6.2 million, while Home Again closed things out in fourth with $3.3 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Kingsman: The Golden Circle – $39 million
2) The LEGO Ninjago Movie – $37 million
3) It – $35 million
4) American Assassin – $8.5 million
5) Home Again – $3 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Kingsman: The Golden Circle – $39 million
2) It – $30 million
3) The LEGO Ninjago Movie  – $21 million
4) American Assassin – $6.2 million
5) Home Again – $3.3 million

Next weekend sees the release of American Made and Flatliners. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
