Two sequels and a CGI extravaganza hit theaters

It’s a big weekend at the box office, as a flurry of new releases are entering into an already crowded arena. Will any of them be hits, or are we looking at another bunch of also-rans? Here are our predictions:

MMORPG lovers have been waiting for a live-action version of the hugely popular game Warcraft for years, and its finally hear, directed by Duncan Jones. Has the waiting been the hardest part? Are we getting a new Lord of the Rings or another lame Dungeon and Dragons wannabee? The truth is, in North America at least, the demand for this film simply isn’t there. The reviews here have been atrocious and, while it’s making a bundle overseas (maybe even enough for a sequel), Warcraft is looking like it will disappear quickly from move theaters. Except a third place debut with $20 million.

Also opening this weekend are two sequels to fairly strong films that may wind up cutting into each other’s audiences. The Conjuring 2 is the James Wan-directed horror sequel to the 2013 original that scared up decent reviews and box office upon its original release. This new edition has been getting strong notices as well, and audiences are in desperate need of something spooky this summer. Meanwhile, Now You See Me 2 sees the return of the Four Horseman, the group of marauding magicians who made a killing at the box office back in 2013. Unfortunately, reviews for this one have been lackluster, but the star power involved (Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, etc) may draw in the adults not brave enough to see The Conjuring 2. Look for The Conjuring 2 to debut in first place with $35 million, while Now You See Me 2 will hit second place with $28 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows to plunge to fourth place with $13 million, while Me Before You will close things out in fifth place with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) The Conjuring 2 – $35 million
2) Now You See Me 2 – $28 million
3) Warcraft – $20 million
4) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows – $13 million
5) Me Before You – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I know absolutely nothing about Warcraft, so I think I’ll wait for the DVD … I might hit the cinema for NYSM2, maybe. 🙂

    1. P.S. I saw it anyway … it’s not great, and certainly sets up the next however-many movies, but it wasn’t anywhere as bad as it’s been made out to be either. Maybe it does need to be seen without expectations.
