I remember first watching the Jonny Quest cartoons sometime in the early 1980’s. I’m not talking about the re-make series. I don’t rate that one at all. I’m talking about the original Hanna–Barbara Production series from the mid 1960’s, seen in syndication for new audiences over the following decades.
That was the good stuff. That was some of the original, visual, science fiction and action-adventure crack that would inform my love of pop culture to this day!
Jonny Quest, his best-buddy Hadji, his father Dr. Benton Quest, special agent bodyguard Race Bannon and, of course, the rambunctious dog, Bandit. That was my team, adventuring to far-flung places like the South American jungles and deserts of Egypt and high mountaintops of Nepal, fighting crime while studying archeology, science, history and culture.
I wanted to be Jonny Quest – who didn’t???
And now he’s back at it, in comic book form, with today’s release of Future Quest #1 – follow me after the jump for the adventure of a lifetime!
Future Quest #1

Future Quest is the first series of comic books that DC Comics will be publishing based on the Hanna-Barbara line of action heroes that a whole generation grew up with during the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s. Really, it’s an idea that’s come full circle as Doug Wildey, the Jonny Quest animated series creator and designer, got his start in comics. And here we are in 2016, bringing the character to the very place that seeded his look and style.
Perhaps the most exciting element of Future Quest is that although Jonny and his compatriots are the stars, they’ll be crisscrossing the globe and running into other Hanna-Barbara characters for the first time. In these pages you’ll find: Space Ghost, Birdman, the Herculoids, the Galaxy Trio and many more! Just check out that beauty of a cover!
Written by Jeff Parker (Batman ’66, Aquaman) and illustrated by Evan “Doc” Shaner (a Jonny Quest name if ever I read one!) the first issue sees Jonny and Hadji making a startling discovery in the Florida swamplands – while getting pulled into a galactic threat with the Space Rangers!
The extra-sized first issue with a wrap-around cover also features loads of character designs by the recently departed Darwyn Cooke, artist and writer extraordinaire. Here was a comic book idea that man could absolutely get behind!
