Allegiant looks to take down Zootopia this weekend

The third instalment in a surprisingly lacklustre film franchise hits theatres this weekend, though it’s unlikely it will make any real impact at the box office. What film will come up on top? Here’s our prediction:

The Divergent Series: Allegiant is the third film the series based on the young adult novels, and while the previous instalments have both made over $125 million at the box office, neither caught on the way The Hunger Games or even the Harry Potter films did. There’s minimal hype surrounding this movie, which bodes poorly for both its reception this weekend, not to mention the fourth film due out next year. Look for a second place showing with $30 million.

Also opening this weekend is the faith-based film Miracles From Heaven, which should do well in the pre-Eastern weekend, along with the presence of Jennifer Garner,  who has been making headlines for her upfront discussions about the end of her marriage to Ben Affleck. Look for a third place debut with $15 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Zootopia will continue its winning ways with a first place showing and $33 million. 10 Cloverfield Lane will be in fourth place with $12 million, while Deadpool will close things out in fifth place with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Zootopia – $33 million
2) The Divergent Series: Allegiant – $30 million
3) Miracles From Heaven – $15 million
4) 10 Cloverfield Lane – $12 million
5) Deadpool – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
