It was a solid but not spectacular showing this weekend for the latest film to top the box office. Here’s what went down:
Kung Fu Panda 3 debut at number one this weekend with $37 million, clearly the film for families. That number was down from both the original’s debut ($60 million) and the first sequel ($47 million), but hopefully the movie will be in it for the long haul over the coming weeks.
As for the rest of the top five, The Revenant was in second place with $12 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens grabbed third place with $10.4 million. It is now $5 million away from hitting the $900 million mark in North America, which it should do sometime this week. The Finest Hours debut in fourth place with a lacklustre $10 million, while Ride Along 2 closed things out in fifth place with $7.9 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Kung Fu Panda 3 – $50 million
2) The Revenant – $14 million
3) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $11 million
4) The Finest Hours – $10 million
5) Ride Along 2 – $7.5 million
