Kung Fu Panda 3 to crush the competition this weekend at the box office

This weekend, one movie should KO the competition with its Kung Fu grip. Here’s our prediction:

Kung Fu Panda 3 is, wait for it, the third in the successful DreamWorks Animation series of kids films about a, wait for it, panda that knows Kung Fu. The first two films were very successful, the first grossing over $200 million while the second did about $165 million – both exceptional numbers. I’m skeptical as to whether this third installment will reach those sorts of numbers, but we should still see a solid opening weekend. Look for a first place showing with $50 million.

Also out this weekend is the Chris Pine seafaring rescue film, The Finest Hours. Reviews have been so-so for this one, and Pine has yet to demonstrate that he can open a film. The Finest Hours will likely go the way of In The Heart of the Sea, which is straight to the bottom of the ocean. Look for a fourth place debut with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Revenant will be in second place with $14 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will grab third place with $11 million while Ride Along 2 will close things out in fifth place with $7.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Kung Fu Panda 3 – $50 million
2) The Revenant – $14 million
3) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $11 million
4) The Finest Hours – $10 million
5) Ride Along 2 – $7.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I never saw the original when it came around, but I’m going through a bit of an animated movie phase … might just check the first two out. 🙂
