What to see, what to see? It’s a relatively quiet weekend at movie theaters, with a few less than dynamic new releases looking for the top spot. Could this entry into the 2016 horror release schedule make the impact some are predicting, or will last week’s number one hold strong? Here’s our prediction:
The Boy is a new horror film that places The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan (Maggie) in her first starring role. The story, about a nanny hired to take care of a porcelain doll that a couple uses in place of their dead son, definitely has a spooky quality to it, like something out of an old Twilight Zone episode. As Rotten Tomatoes shows us, possessed dolls have a long history in Hollywood, so The Boy could do alright business at the box office, especially if fans of Cohen decide to come out in force. Look for a fourth place showing with $14 million.
Also new this weekend is Dirty Grandpa with Robert DeNiro and Zac Effron. While DeNiro has a decent track record over the last couple years in comedies, this one just feels like pandering. Look for a fifth place debut with $12 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Revenant should finally find its way to number one in its third weekend in release with $23 million. Ride Along 2 will drop to number 2 with $17 million, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens right behind it in third place with $15 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) The Revenant – $23 million
2) Ride Along 2 – $17 million
3) Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $15 million
4) The Boy – $14 millon
5) Dirty Grandpa – $12 million
