The Rock and San Andreas are coming to lay the smack down on theaters this weekend

Can you smell what The Rock is cookin’? If all goes according to Dwayne Johnson’s plan, you will be this weekend, as his latest big budget film enters the summer race. How will it do? Here’s our prediction:

San_Andreas_posterSan Andreas is The Rock’s answer to blockbuster disaster flicks like The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact and 2012. I don’t know about you, but those movies both engross me and freak me out. We all know the world is going to hell in a bucket, but at least I’m enjoying the ride when I see it on the big screen. That’s what I’m expecting out of this film – the horror of a world destroying itself, with innocent people helping one another out along the way. It’s a good formula, though not necessarily the stuff of a good movie. Reviews are 52% rotten over at Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences looking for spectacle are likely going to be satisfied. Look for a first place showing for San Andreas with $48 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Pitch Perfect 2 to hold on to second place with $18 million. Mad Max: Fury Road should continue along its winning road, landing in third place with with last week’s with $15 million, while last week’s number one flick, Tomorrowland, will fall to fourth place with $14.5 million. Finally, this weekend’s other new release, Cameron Crowe’s romance film Aloha will likely flop into fifth place with $11.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) San Andreas – $48 million
2) Pitch Perfect 2 – $18 million
3) Mad Max: Fury Road – $15 million
4) Tomorrowland – $14.5 million
5) Aloha – $11.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
