Pitch Perfect 2 looks for a perfect opening, Mad Max hopes to unleash fury at the box office

Can the Mighty Avengers hold strong this weekend, or will a new release manage to topple them from the top? Here’s our prediction:

Pitch_Perfect_2_posterI don’t know about you, but I’m actually pretty psyched to see Pitch Perfect 2. The first one, which the Queen and I recently watched on Netflix, was a hell of a lot of fun, and there’s some serious hype built around this second instalment. The first wound up a decent sized hit back in 2012, making $65 million off of its $17 million budget. In the past three years, appreciation has certainly grown for the film, and I feel confident that the movie will have an outstanding opening weekend. I even think it will take down the Avengers. On that note, look for a first place debut with $65 million.

Max_Mad_Fury_Road_Newest_PosterAlso opening this weekend is Mad Max: Fury Road, the gloriously reviewed fourth film in the Mad Max franchise, coming thirty years after Beyond Thunderdome was released. Amongst genre fans, expectations are super high for this film, though whether the franchise is going to be able to cross over into the mainstream is really up for debate. Tom Hardy can’t yet open a movie, though Charlize Theron can, and her presence may add some additional appeal. Look for a third place showing with $40 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Avengers: Age of Ultron to fall to second place behind the Bellas with $43 million as it makes its way closer to the $400 million mark in North America. The Age of Adaline will be in fourth place with $4.5 million, while Hot Pursuit will close things out in fifth with $4 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Pitch Perfect 2 – $65 million
2) Avengers: Age of Ultron – $43 million
3) Mad Max: Fury Road – $40 million
4) The Age of Adaline – $4.5 million
5) Hot Pursuit – $4 million
