January is heating up with the release of a few new films that should get audiences into movie theaters. Will any of them top the box office? Here’s our prediction:
There’s absolutely huge buzz for American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring the Oscar-nominated Bradley Cooper. A lot of pundits are predicting an opening of over $50 million, which would be the highest debut for a Clint Eastwood film. I’m hesitant on that number though, so I’m going to predict a strong showing, but one that’s closer to $48 million. American Sniper should still be number one that the box office, though.
Paddington is the live action debut of the classic kids character, and it’s a film that has been getting strong reviews. It’s been a few weeks now since we’ve had a new family film in theaters, and this could be the movie to get parents and children back. Look for a second place debut with $28 million.
As for the rest of the top five, look for The Wedding Ringer with Kevin Hart and Josh Gadd to debut in third place with $25 million. Taken 3 will fall to fourth place with $20 million, while the new Chris Hemsworth film, Blackhat should debut in fifth place with $14 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) American Sniper – $48 million
2) Paddington – $28 million
3) The Wedding Ringer – $25 million
4) Taken 3 – $20
5) Blackhat – $14 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
I’ve seen American Sniper and it’s not what I expected; ending is kind of interesting.
