We kick off this year’s edition of the Biff Bam Pop Holiday Gift Guide with a remastered version of one of thee seminal albums of the 1980s.
While their debut album, The Hurting would perform well with critics and audiences when it hit stores in 1983, peaking at number one the UK charts, it would be Tears for Fears second album, 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair that would cement them as one of the most remarkable bands of the era. The album would top the charts in North America, though it would interestingly peak at number two in the band’s native UK. Songs From The Big Chair would also generate the band’s two Billboard number one singles, “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” (my favourite song of all time, by the way). “Head Over Heels” would also be a hit, peaking at number 3 in the U.S. and number 8 in Canada, and was used to awesome effect in Donnie Darko.
Over the years, Songs From The Big Chair has been remixed, remastered and collected in a variety of formats, the most recent coming this year as a single-disc, double-disc and a 6-disc Super Deluxe Edition, the later of which features remixes, the album in surround sound and a DVD collecting live performances and videos. Whichever version you go with, you can’t go wrong. After nearly 30 years, Songs From The Big Chair remains an amazing, highly listenable album.
