This weekend has the release of two highly anticipated films this year. One is a computer-animated Disney family adventure based on a fairly obscure Marvel Comics property, and the other a serious science fiction odyssey starring Matthew McConaughey and directed by Christopher Nolan, definitely something for two different fantasy audiences. It’s a scifi superhero showdown this week at movie theaters. Meet me after the jump for our predictions.
Big Hero 6 looks like fun and has had lots of time to advertise and entice its audience, and as a reader of the Steven T. Seagle comic it’s based on, I know we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg, so there are lots more goodies and superhero action to come. Interstellar is straight on serious, a Right Stuff for the future space exploration crowd, and of course it’s got McConaughey coming off of his quiet cool car commercials and the awesome “True Detective.” It will be a tight race.
Here’s our prediction: We at Biff Bam Pop! predict that both films will have a very satisfying release weekend, both in the $40 million range with Big Hero 6 just edging out Nolan’s somber space odyssey. As for the rest of the top five, Ouija and Fury will still be hanging in there, as will Nightcrawler, with Gone Girl and The Book of Life just bubbling under the five spot.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Big Hero 6 – $42 million
2) Interstellar – $41 million
3) Ouija – $8 million
4) Fury – $7 million
5) Nightcrawler – $5 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
