It was a lacklustre performance for both new releases this weekend. Here’s what went down:
Think Like A Man Too only managed to bring in $30 million, less than the original’s $33 million from a few years ago. Whenever a sequel doesn’t overshadow its predecessor, it’s not great news. Expect this film to start to tail off pretty quickly.
Jersey Boys also had a rough weekend, debuting in fourth place with $13.5 million. Unless word of mouth gets out to an older audience, there’s no way this film will make back its $40 million budget, at least in North America.
As for the rest of the top five, 22 Jump Street dropped to second place with $29 million, a drop of only 49%, which is great for a sequel. The film has already grossed more than $100 million, so everyone involved should be hugely happy with the results. 23 Jump Street, anyone?
How To Train Your Dragon 2 brought $25 million to land in third place, while Maleficent closed things out in fifth with $13 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Think Like A Man Too – $45 million
2) 22 Jump Street – $30 million
3) How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $22 million
4) Jersey Boys – $14 million
5) Maleficent – $11 million
