Two big sequels are going head to head this weekend, and which will come out on top is anybody’s guess. Or in this case, it’s my guess. Here are my predictions:
“The Dark Knight of animated sequels” – so says Comic Book Resources about How To Train Your Dragon 2, which is absolutely a bold statement and what that may help get even more audiences into theatres this weekend. Ads have been everywhere for this film, and the first one was a surprise success back in 2010, grossing over $200 million in North America. Look for families to make the second flick another hit, with a $55 million opening weekend.
Right behind will be 22 Jump Street, the sequel to the surprisingly successful (and funny) 21 Jump Street. Once again, we have another sequel that has been receiving good reviews. Consider this solid counter-programming to How To Train Your Dragon 2, and look for a close second place showing of $52 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Fault In Our Stars will drop to third place with $24 million; Maleficent will be close behind in fourth with $22 million, while Edge of Tomorrow will close things out in fifth place with $15 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) How To Train Your Dragon 2 – $55 million
2) 22 Jump Street – $52 million
3) The Fault In Our Stars – $24 million
4) Maleficent – $22 million
5) Edge of Tomorrow – $15 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
