Will Johnny Depp be able to transcend a string of poorly performing films to top the box office this weekend? Here’s our prediction:
It’s been a rough couple of years for Johnny Depp’s track record, with neither Dark Shadows nor The Lone Ranger up to snuff either commercially or critically (for the record, I thought and still think Dark Shadows is a fun film that got a bad rap). This week’s sci-fi release, Transcendence looks to make an impact. It’s darker than the last few Depp films, and director Wally Pfister’s pedigree as Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer should bring in Nolan acolytes. Unfortunately, Transcendence will still have to battle the forces of Rio 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, both of which have been doing great business and should hold the film off from the top. Look for a third place debut with $20 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Rio 2 should edge out Captain America: The Winter Solider to grab the top spot with $24 million, with Cap right behind it in second place with $23 million. Much like last weekend, these two could flip-flop as the weekend progresses so it will be especially interesting to see how things turn out. Look for Christian film Heaven is for Real to claim the fourth spot with $15 million, with parody film A Haunted House 2 closing things out in fifth with $13 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Rio 2 – $24 million
2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $23 million
3) Transcendence – $20 million
4) Heaven is for Real – $15 million
5) A Haunted House 2 – $13 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
