All those who saw I, Frankenstein this weekend, say “aye”.
That sound you hear is crickets. Lots of them.
The early estimates are in and this weekend’s one new release was a huge bomb at the box office, bringing in a paltry $7.8 million to land in sixth place. There’s no silver lining for this film, as it couldn’t even line its pockets with the more expensive IMAX ticket prices. With a budget of $64 million, I think we’re already looking at one of the more high profile failures of the year, and it’s only January.
Holding on to first place was Ride Along, which brought in $21.5 million to up its two week take to a more than impressive $75 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Lone Survivor came in second with $12.8 million, with The Nut Job close behind in third with $12 million. Frozen was in fourth place with $10 million, while Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit closed things out in fifth with $9 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Ride Along – $20 million
2) The Nut Job – $16 million
3) I, Frankenstein – $15 million
4) Lone Survivor – $14 million
5) Frozen – $12 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:
1) Ride Along – $21 million
2) Lone Survivor – $12.8 million
3) The Nut Job – $12 million
4) Frozen – $10 million
5) Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – $9 million
Next week sees the release of Labor Day and That Awkward Moment. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
Watched Frankenstein last night; wasn’t nearly as bad as its reviews, but definitely underwhelming.
The whole concept of I Frankenstein is worthy of ridicule. And I love the fact they kept selling it as “FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU UNDERWORLD” as if that, and Bill Nighy were supposed to dupe us into thinking this was a sequel to that franchise. Also, I like Eckhart, but he’s hardly leading man material. To those who’ve seen it: better or worse than Universal’s Van Helsing?
