It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the box office, with a series of high profile films looking for your dollars this weekend. Which will hit number one? Here’s our prediction:
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues features Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, the no-nonsense title character. That’s all I’m going to say about this film, since promotion has been absolutely massive over the last few months. Credit has to go to Ferrell for his willingness to go out and sell the film to the masses, which should translate into a strong opening weekend. Look for Anchorman 2 to debut at the top of the box office with $46 million.
Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!American Hustle is the new David O. Russell film featuring an ensemble cast that includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and many more. A 1970s period piece, the film has been getting rave reviews, which will definitely help its opening weekend. Look for a third place debut with $20 million.
Saving Mr. Banks stars Tom Hanks as the legendary Walt Disney, which should be enough to garner some interest from moviegoers. It tells the story of Walt’s attempt to develop to Mary Poppins with author P.L. Travers, played by Emma Thompson. The film could be overshadowed by everything else at the box office, so its debut is likely going to be somewhat soft. Look for a fifth place finish with $14 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is going to take a serious tumble this weekend. Look for a second place showing with $29 million. Meanwhile, Frozen will grab fourth place with $17 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues – $46 million
2) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – $29 million
3) American Hustle – $20 million
4) Frozen – $17 million
5) Saving Mr. Banks – $14 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
