Will The Hunger Games Catch Fire? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

This is one of those columns that doesn’t need too much time, or even a ton of insight. We all know Catching Fire is going to take over movie theatres this weekend. We all know its going to make a ton of money. The only question is – how much?

Catching-Fire_posterThe Hunger Games brought in $152 million during its opening weekend, and with the stellar reviews Catching Fire has been garnering, we should see the second film do even bigger business. Fandom is stoked for this one and the franchise should be growing, so look for an amazing opening of $180 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!

Delivery_Man_PosterAlso debuting this weekend is Delivery Man, staring Vince Vaughn as a man whose sperm donations led to the fathering of 533 children. The film is a remake of the Canadian movie Starbuck, but is unlikely to find an audience this weekend. Its been a while since Vince had a hit, and this won’t be helping his track record. Look for a fourth place debut with $10 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Thor: The Dark World and The Best Man Holiday will be duking it out for second place; look for Thor to narrowly come out on top with $16.5 million, with The Best Man Holiday behind it with $16 million. The two of them could switch spots, mind you, so it will be interesting to watch how the weekend plays out. Meanwhile, Last Vegas will close things out in fifth with $6 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Catching Fire – $180 million
2) Thor: The Dark World – $16.5 million
3) The Best Man Holiday – $16 million
4) Delivery Man – $10 million
5) Last Vegas – $6 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I’d have gone a wee bit lower and said $172, but with the critical acclaim far exceeding the previous film’s, it may draw in people who wouldn’t normally go. I’m really interested to see the where the number lands.

  2. I’ve been spending my Friday night counting ticket stubs and there’s no way Catching Fire hits 180. More like 155. Tops. Maybe a wee bit more if you count my two cents. 😉
