Captain Phillips vs Machete Kills – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Two new releases make their way into theatres this weekend – will either top the box office? Here’s our predictions:

Captain_Phillips_PosterCaptain Phillips stars Tom Hanks in the true life of a captain whose ship is overrun by Somali pirates. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the thinking-man’s big budget director, the commercials for this one have been hard to avoid, and the topical nature of the film will likely appeal to adult moviegoers. However, even with Hanks as a big time draw, I don’t think Captain Phillips will be able to knock Gravity out of the top spot. Look for a second place debut with $25 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
Machete_KillsAlso new this week is Machete Kills, the sequel to the 2011 staring Danny Trejo and directed by Robert Rodriguez. The film, while not a big box office success, did good business on DVD. This time out, the cast includes Carlos Estevez (aka Charlie Sheen) and Mel Gibson, which likely won’t help Machete Kills. Look for a fifth place debut with $6.5 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Gravity should hold onto the top spot again with a strong $35 million. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 will claim third place with $13.5 million, while Runner, Runner will come in fourth with $7 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Gravity – $35 million
2) Captain Phillips – $25 million
3) Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 – $13.5 million
4) Runner, Runner – $7 million
5) Machete Kills – $6.5 million
