Three new movies want your money this weekend, but only one of them is a surefire hit. Here are our predictions:
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 is the sequel to the 2009 hit animated film, and is really the only choice for families this weekend. That means that this one should be the easy winner at the box office this weekend. Look for a first place finish with $40 million.
Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
Don Jon is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s debut film as a director, and he’s staring alongside Scarlett Johansson in this tale of a bartender who prefers online porn to actual relationships. JGL has been all over the media this week promoting the movie, including a hilarious bit on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The film should debut well, but could be a huge hit. Look for a second place showing with $18 million.
Rush is the new racing film from director Ron Howard, and staring Chris Hemsworth. Typically, race films don’t do particularly well at the box office (anyone remember Driven? Didn’t think so), but Hemsworth is a shining star thanks to his role as the mighty Thor. Plus, the film has some post-TIFF buzz and there’s no question that Ron Howard is a popular director who tends to know what people like in a mainstream film. Look for a fourth place showing with $12 million.
As for the rest of the top five, look for Prisoners to drop to third place with $14 million, while Insidious Chapter 2 will close things out with $9 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 – $40 million
2) Don Jon – $18 million
3) Prisoners – $14 million
4) Rush – $12 million
5) Insidious Chapter 2 – $9 million
