2 Guns Or The Smurfs 2? Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

If you’re into numerology, this weekend will likely have you contemplating the number 2, as it features in both of the big new releases hitting theatres. Will either top the box office? Here’s our prediction:

Two_guns_posterBased on the BOOM! Studios comic book created by Steven Grant, 2 Guns stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as DEA and FBI agents investigating one another who discover they’ve been set up by the CIA. This is a pretty stellar team-up of two bona-fide action stars who tend to deliver the goods. The fact that this isn’t a sequel and not a hugely known comic book should actually work well in favour of 2 Guns. Look for a first place showing with $38 million.

The_Smurfs_2_posterAlso out this weekend is The Smurfs 2, the follow-up to the very successful 2011 first instalment, and featuring all the original cast members alongside returning director Raja Gosnell. There hasn’t been as much hype for this particular film, but it’s safe to say it will serve as decent family fare for the weekend. Look for a second place debut with $26 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Wolverine will fall to third with $23 million. The Conjuring should hit fourth place with $13 million, while Turbo will close things out in fifth place with $9.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) 2 Guns – $38 million
2) The Smurfs 2 – $26 million
3) The Wolverine – $23 million
4) The Conjuring – $13 million
5) Turbo – $9.5 million
