Pacific Rim vs Grown Ups 2 – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

This weekend sees a massive sci-fi flick take on a comedy sequel. Which one, if either, will claim the top spot at the box office? Here are our predictions:

Pacific_Rim_FilmPosterPacific Rim is the film geeks around the world have been salivating about – giant robots vs giant monsters, as directed by the one and only Guillermo Del Toro. The big question is, are there enough geeks out there eager to spend their money on a non-franchise film without any big stars. Some observers would have you think no – there’s been lots of talk about poor tracking going on for the film, and that audiences aren’t interested in it at all. Then again, reviews have been stellar for the film, which appears to be big and bold. I think that Pacific Rim could surprise everyone this weekend and over-perform, much the way that World War Z did a few weeks ago. Look for a second place showing with$46 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
Grown_Ups_2_PosterAlso opening this weekend is Grown Ups 2, a sequel to an Adam Sandler film that I didn’t anyone actually cared about. Sandler definitely needs a hit here, as his last few films (Jack and Jill, That’s My Boy) have failed to find audiences (it doesn’t help when then they’re universally panned by everyone). This could be a family film for everyone who already waited in line to see Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University. Look for a third place showing, right behind Pacific Rim, with $44 million, and don’t be surprised if these two flip flop by the end of the weekend.

As for the rest of the weekend, look for Despicable Me 2 to hold on to the top spot with $48 million. The Heat will hit fourth place with $14 million, while World War Z will close things out in fifth place with $12 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Despicable Me 2 – $48 million
2) Pacific Rim – $46 million
3) Grown Ups 2 – $44 million
4) The Heat – $14 million
5) World War Z – $12 million
