Two new movies duked it out over the weekend, and in the end, it wasn’t even close. Here’s what went down:
For the second weekend in a row, Monsters University held onto the top spot at the box office, grossing $44.5 million to bring its two week total to $169 million. This will be the last weekend the film sits on top, as next week sees the release of Despicable Me 2.
Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
Debuting in second place was The Heat, with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. The film had a simply stellar opening, with $40 million. Clearly, this titanic team-up really appealed to audiences, allowing McCarthy to continue her winning box office ways.
Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as well for White House Down, which had to settle for fourth place and a disappointing opening of just $26 million. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx together should have done better, but the fact that Olympus Has Fallen is still fresh in audiences minds definitely had an effect on the numbers.
As for the rest of the top five, World War Z dropped to third place with a still strong $29.2 million, while Man of Steel closed things out in fifth with $20.5 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Monsters University – $45 million
2) White House Down – $40 million
3) The Heat – $35 million
4) World War Z – $30 million
5) Man of Steel – $23 million
