The Internship vs The Purge – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions

Consider this weekend the calm before the storm that will surely be the release of Man of Steel. Only one high profile film hits theatres this weekend, about 8 years too late. Here’s our prediction for it’s success:

The-internship-posterThe Internship is a comedy that reteams Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn for the first time since Wedding Crashers was a massive hit nearly 10 years ago. Neither can open a film on their own, and it’s fair to say that each actor’s star power has diminished in the years since Wedding Crashers (though Wilson’s rep has been helped by his work in Midnight In Paris). Unfortunately, the timing for The Internship is just wrong. It’s a crowded summer and it’s doubtful anyone will be rushing out to see this one. Look for a fourth place showing with $15 million.

Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!

The_Purge_posterAlso debuting this weekend is The Purge, a futuristic thriller staring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. No stars but an intriguing concept (in a future America, crime is at an all-time low; an annual day called the Purge allows for 12 hours of unpunishable crime) could help this film stand-out from the pack. Look for a second place showing with $18 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Fast & Furious 6 should maintain it’s hold at the top of the box office with $25 million. Now You See Me will hit third with $17.5 million, while After Earth will close things out in fifth with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Fast & Furious 6 – $25 million
2) The Purge – $18 million
3) Now You See Me – $17.5 million
4) The Internship – $15 million
5) After Earth – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!

  1. I rarely disagree with ur column, but I’m going to predict a swap of the debut films; Internship will take 2nd and Purge 4th…

  2. We’ll find out, won’t we!
