Can Leo and The Great Gatsby take down Robert and Iron Man 3? That’s the question for this weekend. Here’s our prediction.
The one big new release of the weekend is the long awaited Baz Luhrmann 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. A classic story that’s been adapted to film throughout the years, this new version promises the great visuals Luhrmann is renowned for. However, the director’s films often offer lots of style, but can be short on substance and reviews haven’t been kind. The studio is going to have to rely on Leonard Di Caprio’s star power to give this film a shot at box office gold, but I have a feeling The Great Gatsby won’t be the success everyone is hoping for. Look for a second place showing with $40 million.

Iron Man 3 should have no problems holding onto the number position this weekend, on its way to $300 million. Look for it to bring in $75 million. A new film presented by Tyler Perry, Peeples should manage a third place showing, but with an unimpressive $10 million. Pain & Gain will hit fourth place with $5 million, while 42 will close things out in fifth with $4.5 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Iron Man 3 – $75 million
2) The Great Gatsby – $40 million
3) Tyler Perry Presents Peeples – $10 million
4) Pain & Gain – $5 million
5) 42 – $4.5 million
