A huge weekend for anyone wearing ruby slippers, and proof that Sam Raimi is more than just the Spider-Man franchise when it comes to box office dollars. Here’s what went down.
A stunning debut for Oz: The Great And Powerful, which brought in $80 million in it’s first three days, overperforming amidst some fairly middling reviews. Chock this up to the fantastic Disney marketing machine, the appeal of a return to Oz that isn’t Return To Oz and having Sam Raimi as the director. Geeks love him for Spider-Man and Evil Dead, and now families will love him for Oz. The film should be able to hold onto the top next weekend as well, and could have $200 million in its sights. Meanwhile, it’s worldwide gross is already $150 million, so this is another big hit for Disney.
Find out how the rest of the top five turned out after the jump!
