This weekend sees a return to Oz courtesy of the great Sam Raimi. Will the director behind the original Spider-Man trilogy lead a whole new generation down the Yellow Brick Road? Read our prediction to find out.
An indirect prequel to The Wizard Of Oz (MGM owns the rights to certain aspect of the L. Frank Baum’s story), Oz: The Great and Powerful stars James Franco as the title character, alongside a bevy of witchy beauties, including Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. With the Disney marketing machine in full effect, there’s no way audiences aren’t aware that this is out this weekend, in 3D and IMAX, no less. This is the first real blockbuster of 2013 and should satiate everyone looking for a spectacle. With that in mind, Oz: The Great and Powerful should have no problems claiming top spot at the box office. Look for a first place debut with $65 million.

With Oz: The Great and Powerful eating away the majority of audience dollars this weekend, the rest of the top five should be lucky to gross double digits. Jack The Giant Slayer will drop to second place with $12.5 million; Identity Thief will claim third with $10 million, followed close behind by Snitch in fourth with $9 million. Rounding out the top five will be new release Dead Man Down with just $5 million, since headliner Colin Farrell can barely open a film.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Oz: The Great And Powerful – $65 million
2) Jack The Giant Slayer – $12.5 million
3) Identity Thief – $10 million
4) Snitch – $9 million
5) Dead Man Down – $5 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
I agree with your predictions; I like Colin Farrel, but when are the studio execs going to figure out that he can’t open a movie???
