It was one of the slowest box office weekends of the year, which meant small returns for the new releases. Here’s how the weekend turned out.
The Possession scared up enough money to become the number one film at the box office this weekend, debuting with $17 million. While not an amazing number, the film did manage to make back its $14 million budget opening weekend, which is a definite accomplishment. It may no be big money bragging rights, but its still bragging rights.
Find out how the rest of the weekend went down after the jump!
Debuting in second is the prohibition-era gangster flick Lawless with a less than impressive $9.6 million. It appears audiences may not be interested in Shia Labeouf unless he’s duking it out with giant robots that are more than meets the eyes.
Remember that movie I mentioned on Friday, The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventures. It didn’t even debut in the top 20! Dare I say, there was just no love for the Oogieloves. Yes, yes I dare.
As for the rest of the top five, The Expendables 2 came in third with $8.8 million, The Bourne Legacy claimed fourth with $7 million, while ParaNorman closed things out with $6.5 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The Possession – $13 million
2) Lawless – $10 million
3) The Expendables 2 – $8 million
4) 2016: Obama’s America – $7.5 million
