Battleship, What To Expect When You’re Expecting & The Dictator Take On The Avengers – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Predictions, Weekend of May 18th, 2012

Three new films – two comedies and a Transformers style action flick – are looking to knock The Avengers off the top of the box office mountain. Will any of them be able to topple this summer’s juggernaut, or will the end of the weekend find The Avengers assembled back at number one? Here are our predictions:

Directed by Peter Berg, Battleship stars Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Rhianna and others in a film based kinda sorta on the classic Milton Bradley game. It goes without saying that the trailers give off a huge, Transformers vibe to the film, which may be enough to bring audiences in. The movie has already made $215 million overseas on an estimated $200 million budget, which isn’t a bad showing. I think that as a summertime flick, Battleship has what audiences are looking for – sfx and explosions – but likely not enough to toppled The Avengers. Look for Battleship to open with $53 million for second place.

What To Expect When You’re Expecting is an ensemble comedy based on the book of the same name, starring Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, Chris Rock and Elizabeth Banks. I would consider this to be perfect counterprogramming to both Avengers and Battleship, especially for those couples looking for a date night flick. While the subject matter may appear to skew women, the presence of Chris Rock should help bring in a male audience as well. I’m predicting What To Expect When You’re Expecting will wide up in third place with $23 million.

Finally, Sacha Baron Cohen is back with another comedy, The Dictator (you can read CoreCorina’s take on the film here). The trailers have been funny, but a comedy about a dictator and terrorist is definitely going to be a hard sell, regardless of Cohen’s pedigree. The film opened this past Wednesday to slightly over $1 million, which isn’t particularly impressive. I’m predicting The Dictator will conquer fourth place with $16 million.

As for the rest of the top five, The Avengers should hold onto the top spot for the third weekend in a row. I’m predicting a strong gross of $65 million to take it well past $400 million. Dark Shadows should close things out in fifth spot with $14.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Marvel’s The Avengers – $65 million
2) Battleship – $53 million
3) What To Expect When You’re Expecting – $23 million
4) The Dictator – $16 million
5) Dark Shadows – $14.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
